MotoGP San Marino GP: Moto2 and Moto3 results

Leopard Honda’s Angel Piqueras took a remarkable Moto3 victory at Misano during the San Marino Grand Prix.

For the second time in a week, a Spanish teenager stood on the top step of the podium for the first time, following the success of KTM Ajo’s Jose Antonio Rueda in Aragon last Sunday.

The 17-year-old was forced to negotiate two Long Lap penalties after a collision with Britain’s Scott Ogden on Saturday and came from behind to beat GASGAS Tech3’s Daniel Holgado by 0.035s – the narrowest finish ever at Misano.

The triumph marked the first victory for the 2023 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup champion in his debut stint in Moto3, after a thrilling race between five riders at the front and plenty of overtaking.

Holgado took second for his sixth podium of the season and moved up to second in the championship. Ivan Ortola of MT Helmet-MSI was the first KTM rider in the standings and rounded out the top three, which was made up entirely of Spain.

Honda Team Asia’s Taiyo Furosato took his Honda to fourth and the Japanese’s contact with world championship leader David Alonso on the final lap of 22 dropped the Colombian to sixth; the CFMOTO Aspar man was later demoted to seventh after a track restriction violation at the same circuit. Alonso’s championship lead has been reduced to 70 points

This pushed Australian Joel Kelso down to sixth on the BOE KTM, with Husqvarna IntactGP’s Tatsuki Suzuki moving up from 23rd on the grid to eighth.

Honda riders Luca Lunetta and Adrian Fernandez were both adjudged to have started early and were handed two Long Lap penalties. Lunetta had qualified on the front row and the penalty ended his hopes of home glory, but he recovered to ninth. SIC58’s Filippo Farioli was tenth.

Rueda went from a high with a home win in the Grand Prix to a low with a crash at the second corner that cost his race just a few seconds. BOE Motorsports’ David Munoz and CIP Green Power’s Ricardo Rossi were the other victims in the incident.

Moto2 was won by MT Helmets -MSI’s Ai Ogura, riding for MotoGP. The Japanese rider beat Fantic Racing’s Aron Canet and Marc VDS’ Tony Arbolino to take his third win of the season.

KTM Ajo’s Celestino Vietti crashed out of contention for victory from fourth place at Turn 16 with three laps to go.

QJMotor Gresini’s Manuel Gonzalez finished last in fourth place, while CFMOTO Aspar’s Jake Dixon, winner of the Aragon GP, completed the top five.

Another MotoGP class rider looking to enter next year, Sync SpeedUp’s Fermin Aldeguer, made up for the disappointment of his crash in Aragon last weekend with a sixth place finish.

Arbolino’s team-mate Filip Salac was seventh to lead the quartet between Italtrans Racing’s Diogo Morira, QJMotor Gresini’s Albert Arenas and IntactGP Husqvarna’s Darryn Binder in tenth.

SpeedUp Racing’s Alonso Lopez crashed on the second lap and was later given a Long Lap penalty for exceeding track limits.

Sergio Garcia made an emotional jump from 24th to 12th on the grid, but could not prevent Ogura from taking the lead in the Moto2 championship. The Spaniard was in tears after the race, while the Japanese rider now has a nine-point lead over his MT Helmets – MSi team-mate, who is at the top of the standings.
