Montanans, do the Olympics really need more events?

With the Summer Olympics coming up soon in Paris, I recently heard that breakdancing will become an Olympic discipline for the first time.

Serious??

Okay, it’s physically demanding. Granted, like gymnastics floor exercise and figure skating, it has technique and a certain quick grace. But really, an Olympic event??

According to a February Today Show article, the idea of Olympic organizers is to appeal to a younger demographic with activities they enjoy. Another debut event is whitewater kayaking, where participants race against each other.

Again, is this a sport? I can’t really argue with that, because the rebuttal would simply be, “Slalom skiing.” Point taken.

I was wondering what new events were introduced at the last Olympics. In Tokyo 2021 we saw sport climbing, skateboarding and surfing. Yes, the younger generations are the target audience.

Karate has been removed

The martial art was only at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, then removed. Why is unknown. Here is the question: if Karate is excluded, why do we keep Judo, Taekwondo, Fencing, Archery or Wrestling? Or Boxing and Shooting?

The full schedule is at Olympic.com. The track and field events are all grouped together under “Track and Field.” Some of these are just asking for ridicule. Badminton?? A pentathlon where you have to run and shoot laser guns??

I guess I just have to remember that this is the modern Olympics.

I’ve just reached my limit in the sand. If video games become Olympic events, I’ll stop watching. They’ve officially gone too far.
