‘Mohammed Shami is no longer young’: India’s outgoing bowling coach Paras Mhambrey wants Gautam Gambhir to talk to veteran pacer

India will visit Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India will play a five-Test series that will be a major factor in deciding whether they qualify for the third consecutive WTC final.

“I’m sure whoever goes with Gauti will figure out how to get the best out of Shami. If Tests are the focus now, make sure he is in the best shape for the series in Australia,” Mhambrey said.

Don’t compare Shami’s condition with others

Mhambrey doesn’t want the new coaching staff to compare Shami’s fitness levels with those of young players. He wants them to judge him on his wicket-taking skills.

“The primary role of a bowler is to take wickets. If you are not skilled, you are not in the team. Simple,” Mhambrey added. “Individual fitness varies and cannot be at the same level. So players have to be treated differently. You cannot compare a Shami with a youngster who has just come in. You have to understand what is Shami’s value. Do you need Shami to do the Yo-Yo or bowl so many balls in a Test and make India win the match?”
