The end of the regular season is just six weeks away and the battle for the postseason is in full swing.

While there are a few teams that stand out more than others, the battle for first place in each league and the wildcard races are still open.

This past week we saw the Baltimore Orioles dethroned by the New York Yankees for the top spot in the American League. The Philadelphia Phillies have held on to the top of the National League, but are only slightly ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers.

Below is what the play-offs would look like if the season ended today.

Each team still has about 40 games to play this season, meaning teams that don’t make the play-offs still have plenty of time to qualify.

That’s especially true in the National League, where five teams are six or fewer games out of a wild-card spot.

The New York Mets are just two games behind, but a look at their upcoming schedule shows they could be in for a tough time in the coming weeks to clinch that wild-card spot. The Mets will face the Baltimore Orioles, San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks in their next three series before getting a more manageable opponent in the Chicago White Sox.

Things are a bit easier for the San Francisco Giants, who trail by 4.5 games, as they face the White Sox this week before playing away at the Seattle Mariners. A good performance in those two series could see San Francisco clinch a wild-card spot in the coming weeks.

In the American League, the odds aren’t as open, with only the Boston Red Sox and Mariners within 5.5 games or less of the wild card. But as we’ve seen in the past, any team can perform well at any given time and finish the season strong.

The biggest race to watch at the top of the American League standings is in the East, where the Yankees and Orioles are separated by just a half-game. As has been the case for most of the season, expect those two teams to continue to trade places atop the standings as they both try to earn a coveted first-round bye.
