Mikel Merino: Arsenal agree in principle to £32.67m deal to sign Real Sociedad midfielder | Football News

Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino is in London in preparation for his proposed transfer to Arsenal.

The 28-year-old is expected to win a medal this weekend and sign his personal terms.

The fee agreed between the two clubs is approximately €38.5 million (£32.67 million), made up of an initial fee of €33.5 million (£28.43 million) and a further €5 million (£4.24 million) in performance-related fees.

The 28-year-old has agreed a four-year contract, with an option for a further year.

Sam Tighe talks on the Transfer Talk Podcast about what Mikel Merino can offer Arsenal and how he fits into Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Merino was entering the final year of his contract with the La Liga club and was reportedly keen on a move to the Emirates.

The midfielder played in all of Spain’s matches at Euro 2024, including the winning goal in the 119th minute in the quarter-final against Germany.

With interest in Mikel Merino growing, the question is whether Arsenal will repay their enthusiasm if they sign the midfielder. Will he play a similar role to their former star, Granit Xhaka?

Merino joined Sociedad from Newcastle six years ago and made 242 appearances for the club, winning the Copa del Rey in 2020.

He played just one season at Newcastle under Rafael Benitez, making just 14 appearances in the Premier League.

Merino came through the ranks at Osasuna and joined Borussia Dortmund in 2016, where he won the DFB-Pokal under Thomas Tuchel.
