Mick Schumacher makes heartbreaking comment about father Michael | F1 | Sport

Mick Schumacher, son of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, has revealed that he still uses the advice of his father, who as a seven-time champion shares the all-time F1 record with Lewis Hamilton.

Michael suffered life-changing injuries in a skiing accident in the French Alps in December 2013, and details of his condition have been closely monitored since then.

Mick, who was only 14 at the time of his father’s accident, pursued his dream of reaching F1 without his father’s guidance. He drove for Haas for two seasons before becoming a reserve driver for Mercedes, the team where his father retired to race between 2010 and 2012.

In a new book ‘Inside Mercedes F1’, author Matt Whyman, who had unrestricted access to the team, records a conversation with Mick about his father’s influence.

“I was a crazy kid; everything my dad did, I did,” he told Wyatt. “I started karting when I was three. I was six when I first went diving. By ten I was skydiving. My father was always open to me trying out whatever I wanted to do and racing is it only thing I wanted to do because I enjoyed it the most.”

“He was very helpful and a lot of fun, but could also be a challenge. Once during a kart race I braked very late going into a corner and gained a lot of time. When I told him about it, he said, ‘Yes.’ , but you should have braked like that in every corner!’

“Every time he felt like I wasn’t taking it seriously, he’d say, ‘Mick, would you rather go play football with your friends? If that’s the case, we don’t have to do any of this.’ I insisted that I wanted that race and he said, ‘OK, let’s do it properly’. So we started doing more European karting and I got better and better.”

With one of motorsport’s legends closely involved in his upbringing, Mick enjoyed a clear advantage over his competitors as he rose through the ranks.

Things turned upside down when disaster struck. Although his father remains a key figure, his advice and guidance was curtailed after the accident. “Then my dad had an accident,” Mick said.

“The following year I started racing in the Formula classes and from then on I had to find my own way.

“But I definitely learned a lot of technical points from him that I still use today, and also from his coaching. And I’ve always been very resilient. Whenever I got injured, I liked to keep jumping, and I am still. in reality.”

In addition to his commitments at Mercedes, Schumacher has also competed in hypercars in the World Endurance Championship with the fast-growing Alpine team.

This season he joined forces with Frenchmen Nicolas Lapierre and Matthieu Vaxiviere in car #36, achieving an impressive first podium for the team at the Six Hours of Fuji.

Despite this success, Schumacher’s ambitions to return to Formula 1 have yet to materialize. The 2025 lineup is almost finalized and no spot has been secured for him yet.

He was being considered by Audi for a seat at their Sauber team, but this week they confirmed the signing of Brazilian Formula 2 frontrunner Gabriel Bortoleto to partner Nico Hulkenberg next year.
