Michael Schumacher’s son Mick provides rare insight into his father, ten years after the horror of a skiing accident

Mick Schumacher, son of stricken ex-Formula 1 star Michael, has opened up about life after his father’s horror skiing accident in a rare revelation.

The Schumacher family has been very private when it comes to Michael’s health since his 2013 skiing accident.

The seven-time world champion has not been seen in public since and his condition is a source of mystery, with family members often refusing to talk about Michael.

Schumacher Snr is said to have recently broken cover to attend his daughter’s wedding, which was held at the family’s £27 million mansion in Mallorca, which Mick also attended.

Now Mick, who has acted as reserve driver for Mercedes, has spoken to Matt Whyman for his new fully accessible book entitled ‘Inside Mercedes F1’, about his father’s influence.

“I was a crazy kid; everything my dad did, I did,” Mick said, according to Yahoo.

‘He was really supportive and a lot of fun, but could also be a challenge. Once during a kart race I braked very late entering a corner and gained a lot of time. When I told him about it, he said, ‘Yes, but you should have braked like that in every corner!’

Schumacher Jr. made his long-awaited F1 debut with Haas in 2021, at which time his father was unable to watch his son compete on track, causing further stress for Mick.

“The year after (the accident) I started racing in the Formula classes and from then on I had to find my own way,” Schumacher Jr. said.

‘But I definitely learned a lot of technical points from him that I still use today, and also from his coaching. And I’ve always been very resilient.’

Former Ferrari boss Jean Todt has spoken about his recovery several times since the accident.

In an interview with the French magazine late last year, he said: ‘Michael is here, so I don’t miss him. (But he) just isn’t the Michael he used to be. He is different and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children who protect him.

“His life is different now and I am privileged to share moments with him.

‘That’s all there is to say. Unfortunately, fate struck him ten years ago. He is no longer the Michael we knew in Formula 1.’

On December 29, 2013, Schumacher’s life changed quickly due to the tragic accident during a family holiday in the French Alps.

He fell meters away from a popular ski slope, resulting in serious head injuries.

Schumer decided to go off-piste and was unaware of some boulders that had been obscured by snowfall.

His skis clipped one such boulder and the sudden force catapulted him into the air, leaving him unable to avoid a head-on collision with another boulder. He fractured his skull and suffered brain damage.

In contrast to the successes of his father, F1 has proven to be an unforgiving environment for Mick.

He looks set for another season on the sidelines after being ruled out of a seat for the upcoming season.

Despite success in the F2 and F3 formats, the 25-year-old struggled as he moved up the ranks at Haas, where he raced for two seasons, finishing 19th and 16th before being let go.

He is currently Mercedes’ reserve driver, along with Frederik Vesti, but was looking for a podium role with another team.

He was reportedly an option for the vacant Sauber seat, but that has now been taken up by F2 talent Gabriel Bortoleto.

On Wednesday, Sauber confirmed that current drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu will be released at the end of this season and Bortoleto has been signed.

Schumacher was also rejected by Williams when they needed a replacement for the underperforming Logan Sargeant. Instead, they chose Franco Colapinto.
