Michael Pruitt and Brady Shivers win again at Hillcrest Swinger partnership

Standing just over 200 yards away on Sunday’s 16th hole, Brady Shivers felt himself more excited than usual and reconsidered his club selection. He passed on his 6-iron and picked up a 7-iron, advancing to tee-off distance, marking another victory in a major golf partnership in Lubbock.

Shivers and playing partner Michael Pruitt won the Swinger at Hillcrest Golf & Country Club by three strokes over Shawn Savage and Thumper Galyean, closing with a 10-under par 62. They shot 22 under over three days.

The eagle on the par-5 16th was Shivers’ second of the day and effectively slammed the door shut.

“(The distance of) 206 is normally my 6-iron,” Shivers said. “I said, ‘Hey man, I’m pretty excited.’ So I hit a 7-iron there, and it probably went to about a foot.”

“Everyone was screaming like crazy, thinking it was going to be a double eagle,” Pruitt said. “It was a great shot.”

Great photos are nothing new for either, especially at Hillcrest. Shivers won the Swinger for the sixth time, all since 2017 and the fifth time while sharing a cart with Pruitt. This century, Conway Jordan of Abilene won the Lubbock Country Club Par Buster seven times, and the late J.D. Dickerson won the LakeRidge Stampede six times.

“JD and I were very close the last four or five years of his life,” Shivers said. “To be mentioned in the same sentence as him means a lot.”

Chills will head into next month’s LakeRidge Stampede after winning the past four major partnerships in Lubbock: last year’s Stampede and Par Buster and this year’s Reese Memorial Day Partnership before the Swinger.

Pruitt is the reigning individual Men’s City champion, but there’s no place he’d rather win than Hillcrest, his home track for years. He was reminded of that on par-4 No. 8, when Shivers was in trouble for a change and he par.

“I was so nervous on that putt, I wanted to make it so bad,” Pruitt said, “because we had so much momentum and this is my place. This is my home here. I love this place, and so I I wanted so much to win. So it’s great.”

The winners put the hammer down from the start, birdieing the first three holes. Then Shivers drained an 18-footer for Eagle on No. 4. Pruitt kept the team from dropping a shot on No. 8, and they put 30 on the front.

Savage and Galyean made three birdies of their own from Nos. 3-5 on their way to a 65, all the while trying to stay within reasonable distance. However, on holes 6-8 they missed three putts within 10 feet.

“We kind of weathered the storm,” Galyean said, “but we didn’t make those putts or put any pressure on them today. They closed the ball early, but we played well. We played solid, and for me and Shawn to get second in this tournament with this field… We’re not satisfied, but we’re happy we got second. It is a difficult field of participants.’

Savage played collegiately at Midland College and Houston before playing on pro tours from 1997 to 1999.

“When you’re 50 years old and you’re playing against guys who are 28, 35 years old, they’re hitting the ball 50 to 75 yards longer than I am off the tee,” he said. “To still compete and go to the last day tied for the lead and have a shot – we’re one round away from winning a tournament. … It’s bittersweet. We played well, but I know I didn’t.” there will be many more opportunities to do this in the future.”
