Michael Phelps slams Team USA’s poor swimming performance at the Olympics after winning just one individual gold medal

American swimming icon Michael Phelps couldn’t help but express disappointment at the worst performance by the American men at the Olympic Games in nearly seven decades.

The U.S. men’s swimming team has won only one individual gold medal, when Bobby Finke won the 1500-meter freestyle.

But the U.S. men won only five other individual medals — two silver and three bronze — in one of their worst Olympic performances.

The Americans are typically dominant in swimming, but the last time they took home just one men’s medal was at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne.

Phelps shook his head as the men wrestled in the pool all the time in Paris.

“I was pretty disappointed with the U.S. swimming results overall,” Phelps said in an interview with USA Today last week.

“One of the things I’ve always said over the last few years is that the rest of the world is catching up. I think a lot of the things that we’ve been doing as a country for so long are being overtaken by other people.

“They’re doing the same thing. Hopefully we can make that transition towards 2028.”

Caeleb Dressel, who was expected to be a tough athlete for the Americans after winning five gold medals at the Tokyo Games, failed to win an individual medal despite being the favorite in the 100-meter butterfly and 50-meter freestyle.

Phelps did praise Bobby Finke for his success in the 1500-meter freestyle, in which he also broke the world record.

“Finke last night, that swim was unbelievable. I get chills talking about it now. That was one of the best swims of the entire Olympics,” Phelps said.

“For him to break that world record by just doing it, by pulling it out, challenging the other guys to just make a move, he was prepared. Hopefully the other athletes are better prepared heading into ’28.”

Overall, the Americans were still the dominant force in the pool, thanks to the women’s team. The U.S. won more gold medals and more total medals than any other country.
