Mets offense fails to produce big hit in 3-2 series finale loss to Angels

The Mets lost their second straight game on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-2 to the Los Angeles Angles in the final game of a three-game series.

Here are some key points…

– After a series of strong performances, Jose Quintana wasn’t quite as sharp this time around, as he had to battle through traffic for most of his outing. The left-hander did a good job keeping the Mets in the game, allowing just three runs on three hits while walking four and striking out four in five innings of work.

– Unfortunately for Quintana, the Mets offense couldn’t do much against Angles’ starting pitcher Griffin Canningwho entered the day by allowing at least four runs in six of his last 10 starts. New York had plenty of chances when the right-handed pitcher walked four batters on the afternoon, but he held them to just two runs (one earned) as they went 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Peter Alonso was warming up at the plate, but he struggled this afternoon, as he blew three of those key chances early in the game. The big man grounded out with a man on third in the first inning, rolled into a double play in the third inning, and flew out with two on and two outs in the fifth.

– The Mets had another big chance to turn the tide with runners on the corners and one out in the eighth inning, but Mark Vientos in an inning-ending double play to end the threat. Overall, they left seven men on base and finished a brutal 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position on the afternoon.

– New York held Zach Neto in check during Friday night’s series opener, but he’s been a thorn in their side in the last two games, hitting big in each. After hitting the game-winning home run the night before, the young shortstop rounded the bases for a triple and scored what turned out to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly.

Adam Ottavino a strong outing in relief, striking out two in a scoreless inning. After a bit of a rough patch, the veteran right-handed pitcher has now allowed just one earned run in his last nine appearances.

Most Valuable Player of the Match: Griffin Canning

Canning battled through the crowd all afternoon to earn his fourth win of the season after allowing just two runs and striking out eight in five innings.
