Mets, Braves postponed Wednesday, Thursday

Updated message, 25-09-24, 17:07

According to multiple reports, the Mets and Braves games scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday have been postponed due to inclement weather. Rain is expected to fall in the Atlanta area from Wednesday afternoon through Friday morning.

The two teams are reportedly scheduled to play a doubleheader on Monday, a day before the NL Wild Card begins. At that point, the Mets and Braves could be playing for 5th and 6th place in the playoffs, or they could be fighting to get into the playoffs at all.

It will be a direct double header starting at 1:10 PM

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Postthe Braves decided not to change the start times of the remaining games between the Mets and Braves this week, and the commissioner’s office did not overrule the team.

In his report, Sherman stated that “for business, logistical and perhaps game reasons, the Braves did not want to shift the start times, days or locations for their series against the Mets, despite forecasts making it doubtful to play Wednesday night and even more unlikely to play a three-game series finale Thursday night.”

Sherman continued in his reporting that “MLB was hoping to play a game Wednesday — even with starts and stops — and that at worst, a single game might be needed Monday.” The forecast in Atlanta calls for heavy rain and storms most of the night and into Friday morning, as Helene moves into the area.

Hurricane Helene is headed toward Florida, Georgia, Alabama and several other southeastern states. As the storm intensifies, it is getting closer to Truist Park. The forecast is grim for a game to be played tonight, let alone Thursday. This would create a scenario where the Mets would have to return to Atlanta to play a doubleheader on the final day of the season, which would be Monday. However, there are scenarios where both the Mets and Braves would have secured a playoff spot by then.

As both games become increasingly likely to be postponed, the Mets will travel to Milwaukee on Friday to open the series against a Brewers team that has already won the National League Central and is preparing its starting pitching for the playoffs.

The Braves would welcome the Kansas City Royals, who despite their recent freefall in the American League standings are still alive in the playoff picture. Atlanta would then have to choose between firing their ace Chris Sales with the Royals or hold him off for a possible doubleheader with the Mets.

For both the Mets and Braves, it’s important to note that any postponement would shift the focus to tonight’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. An Arizona loss would move the Braves into sixth place and lower the Mets’ magic number for securing a playoff spot to three. Any combination of three Mets wins and Arizona losing to San Diego in the final weekend would put the Mets in October. Besides the obvious impact on both teams, it could also drastically change the meaning of Monday’s doubleheader from fighting for a playoff spot to settling a seed.
