Merson says Gunners could soon be out of title race

Sky Sports analyst and former Arsenal player Paul Merson remains an asset to many, particularly for his sharp opinions on the game, which often come across as somewhat extreme and reactionary.

Merson was back in the squad in preparation for the Gunners’ visit to Villa Park and a game against Aston Villa, which they lost last season.

It’s fair to say his latest opinion won’t win him any new friends at the Emirates Stadium either.

“This is a huge game. Arsenal were beaten twice by Aston Villa last season and that cost them the title,” he said in his Sportskeeda column, as part of his review of Saturday night’s match.

“If Arsenal lose and Manchester City win this weekend, the Gunners could struggle in the title race. Mikel Arteta’s men also play Tottenham Hotspur and City in September, so it’s not an easy fight from here.

“If things don’t go their way, Arsenal could even be out of the title race in October! I’m not even exaggerating, the next four games, starting with Villa on Saturday, are all tough for them.

“If you lose two, it’s over. I’m going for an Arsenal win, but I think Villa can score.”

While Man City’s relentless pursuit of teams and trophies is becoming the norm, and a handful of defeats could quickly become unaffordable for Arsenal, it is downright ridiculous to dismiss their chances of winning their first title in over 20 years at this early stage.

No account is taken of how strong the Gunners themselves might be during the campaign, or whether City – or anyone else – might suffer a serious dip at any point.

Merson might look back on it later and wish he had never said those words.
