McKamey Manor, ‘most extreme haunted house’ in the US, still open

A haunted house in Tennessee dubbed a ‘torture chamber in disguise’ is still in operation – despite its owner being investigated for traumatizing visitors and calling for the sadistic experience to be permanently ended.

McKamey Manor, the controversial house of horrors in Summertown, about 70 miles southwest of Nashville, has been dogged for years by complaints of violence and inhuman treatment against participants, who at one point were forced to sign a 40-page waiver to just to come in.

Some participants said they were waterboarded, tased, beaten, taunted with spiders and locked in boxes during their nightmare of no escape.

The twisted attraction’s waiver indicated that teeth pulling, finger breaking or head shaving may also have to be endured.

“We are known for not holding back and not using a safe word,” owner Russ McKamey, who has run the Summertown haunted house since 2017, boasted in a recent Hulu documentary about the House of Horrors.

“Either you actually complete the tour, which isn’t going to happen, or you’re at such a breaking point mentally or physically that it’s not safe for you to continue and I have to take you out,” he said.

Yet McKamey told DailyMail.com this weekend as he revealed his appeal is making a comeback this year: “If all those crazy horrible things being said about me were true, I wouldn’t be free and running around doing whatever I want to do. .”

After years of on-and-off backlash, McKamey and his extreme haunt were catapulted back into the national spotlight when the Hulu piece — “Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House” — began streaming last year.

Some participants in the documentary complained on camera about the violence, claiming there was no way to escape their ordeal once it got underway — prompting Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti to launch an investigation to the gory attraction’s practices, WKRN reported.

“A 2019 promotional video from McKamey Manor’s YouTube page shows some of the horrors visitors are subjected to, including being dragged by heavy chains or confined to small spaces as water rushes in,” Skrmetti said at the time.

According to the Spooky House website, participants were required to provide proof that they had recently undergone a healthy physical examination and passed a background check.

One online petition attracted tens of thousands of signatures in an attempt to have the site shut down.

“Advertised as ‘an extreme haunt’ when in fact it is NOT a haunted house. It is a torture chamber in disguise,” Frankie Towery, the organizer of the 2019 call, wrote alongside the petition.

“They do screenings to find the weakest, most easily manipulated people to do the ‘ghost tour’. If Russ doesn’t think you’re easily manipulated, you shouldn’t go,” Towery added.

“It’s literally just a kidnapping (and) torture house.”

It was not immediately clear what plans McKamey had laid out for this year’s event or when it would open. Last year’s tour – titled “DESCENT” – was billed as a “survival horror” show.

The outcome of the AG’s investigation was also unknown.

Additionally, this year’s haunted house saga comes just months after McKamey became embroiled in another legal drama: He was arrested last summer for attempted murder, rape and domestic violence involving an incident with his girlfriend.

According to the local newspaper, the charges were later dropped.

McKamey did not immediately respond to a Post request for comment.
