Matildas play two international matches against Brazil in Brisbane, Gold Coast

The Matildas will play two international friendlies in Queensland against Brazil, the silver medallist at the 2024 Olympic Games.

The Matildas are currently coached by interim manager Tom Sermanni, but they are likely to hope to have a full-time coach by the time friendlies begin.

The opening match will take place on November 28 at Lang Park in Brisbane, where the Matildas will play each other for the first time since the Women’s World Cup.

The Selecao return to Brisbane for the first time since the 2023 World Cup, where they lost 2-1 to France in the group stage. The last time Australia played there was against Sweden, when they lost in the third-place match.

The stadium was also the scene of the Matildas’ dramatic penalty shootout victory over France in the quarter-finals.

The two teams then travel to Gold Coast for a second international match at Robina Stadium on December 1.

“We are delighted to return to Queensland after last year’s record-breaking FIFA Women’s World Cup,” said Football Australia CEO James Johnson.

“We are extremely happy that the Matildas are coming home and playing against a football powerhouse like Brazil.

“Suncorp Stadium brings back incredible memories for Australian football. It will be special to visit a city and stadium that played a significant role in such a historic night for Australian football.”

Brazil will host the next Women’s World Cup in 2027.

Australia and Brazil have not played an international women’s match since 2021.

The two teams then drew 2-2 at Western Sydney Stadium, with Clare Polkinghorne and Sam Kerr taking a 2-0 lead, before Brazil hit back late in the match to end the Aussies’ run of six straight victories over Brazil.

The Matildas have not lost to Brazil since the quarter-finals of the 2016 Olympic Games, when Brazil won 7-6 on penalties after a goalless draw at the Mineirão in Belo Horizonte.

Since 1988, the teams have met 21 times, with the Aussies winning 11, losing eight and drawing two.

Brazil will likely be without their most capped international, Marta. The 38-year-old stated that the Olympic final defeat to the United States in Paris would “probably” be her last appearance in a Brazil shirt. However, she added that she would not “disappear from football”.

After the matches against Brazil, the Matildas will play Chinese Taipei in Melbourne on Wednesday, December 4 and in Geelong on Saturday, December 7.

The Matildas also play an away match against Germany in October.
