Markham man accused of sexually assaulting woman less than two weeks after being released on bail – CP24

A 62-year-old Markham man is facing charges after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman less than two weeks after being released on bail in connection with another alleged assault.

Police say the suspect was initially arrested on the evening of October 3 in connection with an assault near Markham Road and Highglen Avenue that afternoon.

According to police, the victim was walking in the area when she was approached by a suspect unknown to her.

The suspect probably touched the victim sexually and then fled.

He was located by investigators later that evening and charged with assault, but was later released on conditional bail.

Police say investigators believe the same suspect then committed a second assault on the afternoon of Oct. 12 near Denison Street and Cartmel Drive.

In that incident, the suspect was known to the victim and gained access to her home before sexually assaulting her, police say.

“While the two were sitting on the couch, the suspect sexually assaulted the victim before being interrupted and fleeing on foot. Officers quickly located and arrested the suspect,” said a news release from York Regional Police.

The suspect has been identified as Mahendran Thambirathirram, from Markham. He is charged with two counts of assault in connection with the incidents.

Police say investigators believe there may be more victims who have not yet come forward. A photo of the suspect has been released.

The police continue to investigate.
