Mark Wood breaks own record for England’s fastest home game

During a thrilling match at Trent Bridge, Mark Wood twice broke his own record for the fastest over ever bowled by an England player on home soil in the era of ball tracking.

With his first over under attack on the morning of day two of the second Test match of the series against the West Indies, Wood bowled at a blistering pace. He started above 93mph and stayed there, with that first ball his second-slowest of the over. Sky and Cricviz revealed at the time that it was the fastest over bowled by an England bowler at home since such data began to be recorded, going back to 2006.

The next over that Wood bowled did not contain a single ball slower than 94mph, with his fastest delivery being 95.1. Sky then showed that Wood had hit 97mph in his third over, and England’s official social media account revealed that his third over was even faster than his first, setting another record.

What’s even more remarkable is that the record Wood broke was his own, in a match against New Zealand at Lord’s in the 2021 two-Test series.

Woods’ spell was restricted to four overs, going wicketless and conceding 11 runs. He did see a wicket fall at the other end, with Mikyle Louis holed out after the bowling of Shoaib Bashir, giving the off-spinner his first Test wicket.
