Man shot and killed by officers after investigating crash in Riverton

RIVERTON — One man has died after police said he was shot and killed by officers after he “failed to cooperate” during a field alcohol test late Thursday night.

Josh Lee, communications director for the city of Riverton, said police responded just before midnight to reports of a collision between a car driving side by side and another vehicle near the city’s rodeo arena at the corner of 1300 West and 12800 South.

Officers found the suspect in the side-by-side shortly afterward and conducted a field sobriety test, suspecting alcohol was involved in the incident. During that test, Lee said, “the suspect became noncompliant and shots were fired” by officers.

Medical teams immediately responded, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured in the shooting.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, per protocol for critical incidents involving officers. The Salt Lake City Police Department and the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office will handle the investigation.
