Man pleads no contest in deadly hit-and-run in 2022

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) – The Charlestown man accused of causing a crash that killed a 17-year-old East Greenwich girl in 2022 was arraigned Friday.

Aramis Segura, 32, pleaded no contest to driving as a danger resulting in death and the duty to stop in the event of an accident resulting in death.

Police suspect Segura was speeding when he crashed into the back of Olivia Passaretti’s car on I-95 South as she drove home early on New Year’s Day. Passaretti’s car was pushed off the highway and down an embankment, where it struck a tree and overturned. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, police said, Segura abandoned his car and ran through the woods. He eventually hooked up with his then-girlfriend Alicia Peckham, who brought him back to their home in Charlestown.

In August, Peckham was found guilty of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death as an aid and abettor, harboring a criminal, misrepresentation of a criminal offense and obstruction of justice.

Passaretti’s family told 12 News outside the courthouse that they are relieved they will not have to go through a second trial.

“No time is enough time. They just throw out numbers, and it doesn’t matter, the numbers. My daughter doesn’t come back after a certain amount of time,” said Olivia’s mother, Janine Passaretti-Molloy.

“He gets a second chance. She doesn’t,” her sister Victoria added.

Peckham will be sentenced in November and Segura in January.
