Man City continue to search for Rodri replacements ahead of the January transfer window and the Premier League champions have their eyes on Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.

Rodri is out for the rest of the season due to a serious knee injury and Pep Guardiola has been testing players from his current team in the Spaniard’s role since his setback against Arsenal.

According to Football Insider, Guardiola would like to find a solution to the Rodri problem within his current group of players, but if that fails, the Manchester team will have around £82 million to spend during the January transfer window.

Should the Premier League champions decide to expand their squad, Relevo reports that Zubimendi has become a target for the Manchester club as the English giants look to take advantage of the €60 million release clause in his Real Sociedad contract.

The midfielder was a top target for Liverpool during the summer transfer window, but the 25-year-old opted to stay in Spain.

Liverpool came close to signing Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad this summer

Should Man City secure a deal for Zubimendi in January, it would be a major blow for Liverpool as the Reds are still in the market for a number six and are unlikely to have lost interest in the Spaniard .

The Merseyside outfit activated the 25-year-old’s release clause and made significant progress towards completing the deal as the player was keen to move to Anfield. However, Zubimendi made the final decision to stay at Real Sociedad.

The Basque club has made a poor start to the season and is currently fifteenth in La Liga with two wins out of nine.

This could impact the Spanish team’s ability to keep Zubimendi in January and their situation could play into Man City’s hands should they decide to make a move for the Euro 2024 winner.
