Man charged with murder over death of baby he says fell off changing table

GOSHEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio – A Goshen man now faces a murder charge in the death of a toddler who fell off a changing table, according to court documents.

According to court records, 33-year-old Andrew Kammerer faces one count of aggravated murder and one count of assault for the child’s death.

An affidavit filed in court says Goshen police officers responded to a home on East Meadowbrook Drive around 6:49 a.m. Monday after Kammerer called 911. He told dispatchers that the child was having breathing problems after a fall.

According to court records, Kammerer told Goshen officers during an interview that he was changing the child when she fell off the changing table. He told officers she was face down on the ground, picked her up, called 911 and then performed CPR as directed by dispatchers until emergency responders arrived.

While officers were en route, they were told the child had stopped breathing; First responders took her to Bethesda North Hospital, but she was later transferred to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and placed on a ventilator.

The child succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 10:18 p.m. that same day, according to the affidavit.

A Hamilton County Coroner’s Office report sent the next morning noted that three-month-old Evelyn Kammerer had died Monday at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, although the circumstances of her death were still listed as “pending.”

Court records show an MRI showed “a significant amount of bleeding” around the girl’s brain. After she died, coroners performed an autopsy on Tuesday, which revealed significant internal damage to her brain, spine and liver.

“The injuries found during the autopsy were not consistent with an accidental fall and were non-accidental,” the statement read.

During the investigation into Evelyn’s death, Goshen police said officers also learned that Evelyn’s twin sister had suffered “serious physical injuries” in the past that were never reported.
