Man charged in court with ‘serious assault’ on woman in Derry – The Irish News

A man has appeared in Derry District Court charged in connection with what police described as “a serious sexual assault” on a woman in the Lecky Road area in the early hours of Sunday.

Emmet Deehan (32), of no fixed abode, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to a woman with intent on October 27.

He was also accused of sexually assaulting the woman by penetration on the same date.

A police officer linked the suspect to the allegations.

Defense attorney Derwin Harvey said his client had been questioned about the incident for some time.

He said the main evidence at this stage appeared to come from doorbell video footage and his client denied he was the person in the footage.

The lawyer said the “key evidence” would go to the forensic investigation and it could take some time before this was revealed.

Mr Harvey said it would be ‘naive’ for Deehan to apply for bail at an address in the city and said there would be no bail application at this stage.

Deehan was taken into custody and was scheduled to appear again on November 21.
