Malaysian Lim is enjoying a flying start to a professional career

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: Malaysian Marcus Lim has had an eventful first two weeks as a professional golfer, following an impressive top-three finish at the Asian Development Tour’s PKNS Selangor Masters and a top-10 finish at the domestic Toyota Tour’s Fortuner Cup.

The three-time Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship (AAC) competitor outshone a host of seasoned professionals to take top Malaysian honours at the PKNS Selangor Masters with a six-under-par 274 total, just two strokes behind the champion Rahil Gangjee of India. Lim played rounds of 68, 66, 71 and 69 at the Seri Selangor Golf Club to tie for third place with Thailand’s Runchanapong Youprayong, who is also an AAC alumnus.

After playing in the Pro-Am on Sunday, Lim flew to the East Malaysian state of Sarawak for the Fortuner Cup at Sibu Golf Club, where he finished tied for ninth on six under par.

“The last two weeks have taught me a lot, not only about my game, but also about my body. I’m happy with how things went at Seri Selangor, but I’m a little disappointed with the Sibu event as I felt like I threw away too many strokes. I did a lot of homework and prepared very well for the Selangor Masters, but I flew to Sibu with little rest and felt like I hadn’t prepared well enough. But that’s all part of the learning process,” said the 22-year-old, who bats long.

Lim finished tied for seventh at last year’s AAC in Royal Melbourne, equalling Malaysia’s best performance in the event’s 14-year history, despite missing the cut in the previous two editions.

“Events like the AAC are crucial in preparing players for professional golf. They offer high-level competition, giving us the opportunity to compete on top courses with talent from across the Asia-Pacific region,” he said.

“The AAC Academy I attended in Japan this year also prepared me for the transition. It gave me a better understanding of course management, physical and mental conditioning, and working with world-class coaches in world-class facilities,” added Lim, who recently graduated from Sacred Heart University in Connecticut, USA.

In his final season on the U.S. collegiate circuit, Lim was named Northeast Conference Golfer of the Year for the third time after winning medalist honors at the NEC Championship in late April.

Lim’s US$11,025 cheque from the PKNS Selangor Masters places him 12th on the ADT Order of Merit, putting him well-positioned to be among the top 10 players to earn a card to the Asian Tour in 2025 at the end of this season.

“I plan to play the remaining Toyota Tour events and hopefully compete in all ADT events for the rest of 2024,” said Lim. won one title on the Toyota Tour last year as an amateur.
