MALAYSIA ACHIEVES 35 GOLDEN GOALS WITH KARATE

By Nurul Izzati Mansor

MALANG (Indonesia), July 5 (Bernama) – Karate expert H. Sureeya Shankar ensured that the Malaysian contingent achieved the target set by the Ministry of Higher Education during the ASEAN University Games (AUG) 2024 by securing the country’s 35th gold medal today.

The golden moment arrived when Sureeya easily defeated Thai challenger Calermpon Piwlaaiad 9-1 in the final of the 60 kilogram (kg) category held at the Universitas Islam Malang (UNISMA).

He defeated Indonesian Muhammad Yusof Bintang Susanto 11-3 in the qualifying round to advance to the final.

In an interview with reporters, Sureeya said he was very happy to achieve the gold he won at the AUG 2022 in Ubon Ratchathani and to achieve the gold medal that Malaysia is aiming for here.

“I am very happy. Last time I won gold and this year too. In the qualifying round earlier my challenger tried to take me down with leg tackles. I was slightly injured but I tried to strengthen my spirit to reach the final,” he said after the match.

Besides the gold in the men’s 60kg kumite category, Malaysia today won five other gold medals: in the men’s and women’s 4x400m athletics: Mohd Rizzua Haizad Muhamad (110m hurdles), Muhammad Syafiq Zuber (taekwondo) and Muhammad Firdaus Mohd Israj (pencak silat).
