Majima-Focused Like a Dragon: Hawaii Pirate Yakuza Announced at RGG Summit as Next Yakuza Game

The next Yakuza game will center on series wildcard Goro Majima fighting pirates and is called Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and Sega announced during the RGG Summit in September 2024.

The game will reportedly see Majima search for lost treasure and perhaps even feature ship combat in a half-Yakuza, half-Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag-esque game. It’s set to release on February 28, 2025.

A lengthy reveal trailer showed Majima washing up on the beach of Rich Island, near Hawaii, looking worse for wear and being helped by a child with a pet tiger. Majima introduced the clip itself as a story set six months earlier, wondering how on earth he ended up on a beach.

It seems to feed directly into the story of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, with Majima dealing with the fallout from Ichiban Kasuga’s involvement with the Palekana cult on Nele Island. The trailer also showed Majima becoming a pirate captain himself.

The gameplay released showed Majima fighting on the main Hawaii map from Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, along with ships and other new areas. Majima can fight in either the Mad Dog Style or the Sea Dog Style, and players can jump into the Yakuza series for the first time.

Yakuza fans have been waiting a long time for this game to be revealed. While the last mainline game, the colossal Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, was the last mainline game to be released in January, RGG Studio is known for its rapid releases.

not defined

For example, over the past five years, it has released Yakuza 4 Remastered, Yakuza 5 Remastered, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Judgement Remastered, Lost Judgement, Like a Dragon: Ishin, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, and Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, in addition to three Super Monkey Ball Games and an enhanced remaster of Virtua Fighter 5. That’s 12 games in total.

Fans have been trying to guess what this new installment would be ever since Sega announced the RGG Summit back in August. Would it be the next mainline Yakuza/Like a Dragon game, a new spin-off like Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, a new remake like Yakuza: Kiwami or Like a Dragon: Ishin, a new game from the spin-off series Judgement, or something else entirely?

In our 9/10 review of the latter game, IGN said, “Expansive, immersive, and full of dynamic combat, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth isn’t just the best turn-based Like a Dragon game, it’s one of the best games in the entire series.”
