Luis Enrique new PSG contract latest

Luis Enrique is set to sign a new contract with Paris Saint-Germain soon, but according to Jonathan Johnson it is not necessarily something the club are immediately prioritising.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside In his latest column for the Daily Briefing, the French football expert laid out his latest insights into Enrique’s future at PSG and why things seem to have turned out so well for the Spanish tactician at the Parc des Princes.

Enrique won the Ligue 1 title last season and led PSG to the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they unfortunately lost to a surprise Borussia Dortmund. Progress is certainly being made at the club, especially considering the difficulties they have faced since losing star player Kylian Mbappé this summer.

Johnson praised Enrique’s work and said it was no surprise that PSG would now like to give him a new contract. The chances are that things will be finalized in the coming months. However, the club is also working on new deals for players.

Enrique praised for PSG work

“We are working on a new contract for Luis Enrique at PSG. It is not necessarily a top priority at the moment, but there is an on-and-off dialogue between Enrique and the club, with both parties very happy with how things are going. It has been a positive start for Enrique in his first season and there is optimism for this season after a good summer and how the new season has started,” Johnson said.

Luis Enrique has done an excellent job at PSG

“At the moment everything is going according to plan, as Fabrizio Romano has reported. However, I don’t think we will see this happen in the coming days. But PSG will certainly try to solve it in the coming weeks and months.

“If it all goes as expected, I think it’s a very good move for PSG. It’s quite rare that they find a coach who is so willing to take on the challenge that PSG offers, both in terms of the expectations and the pressure that comes with managing a club with a lot of money, who have signed a lot of star players but who haven’t really had the success in the Champions League that many people expected of them.

“What has impressed me most is the way Enrique has imposed a new style on the team and embraced PSG’s ambition to move to a younger and more French, Paris-based core of players. I think his willingness to work towards the future without Kylian Mbappe has also been rewarded, given how they’ve started so far, and I think he’s just generally simplified what has historically been a very difficult management role.

“There aren’t many managers who have had long-term success with PSG, and who knows, maybe Enrique will be the last to fall into that trap, but at the moment things are going very well and it looks like he is on course to become the most successful manager since Thomas Tuchel. Tuchel has clearly taken PSG a step further in the Champions League, reaching the final, but let’s see what this season has in store.

“For now, I’ve been told that the feeling within the camp is very positive, and I think Enrique is also someone who is less likely to clash with the club hierarchy than Tuchel. It also seems that the club is willing to support him and invest in his ideas for the medium to long term, so it seems like a good match so far.

“I think that’s why both parties are keen to sort out a new contract and ensure they can continue to build together for the future. There will also be other challenges that PSG will have to address, which means they won’t be able to focus entirely on Enrique’s contract situation, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some progress in the next international break. There should be an update on that sometime between now and the end of the year, although PSG are also looking at a number of player contracts to resolve before then.”
