You know it’s mid-summer in Michigan when…?

The answer, of course, is when professional golf associations play their respective professional tour events in Michigan.

The state of Michigan is in the national golf spotlight this week as both the PGA Tour and LPGA Tours visit our great state.

Close to home, here in mid-Michigan, the Ladies Professional Golf Association plays in the Dow Championship in Midland from the Midland Country Club (6,256 yards, Par 70). The promotion starts on Thursday and runs until Sunday. The prize money for the event is $3 million, with the winner taking home $328,115.

The format for this event is unique as it consists of 72 teams with two players in its field. This stroke play tournament consists of foursomes (alternate shot) in rounds one and three and fourballs (better ball) in rounds two and four. There is a 36-hole cut with the bottom 33 teams and ties going into the weekend. The Dow Championship is also the only official team event on the LPGA schedule.

Defending champions are Cheyenne Knight and Elizabeth Szokel.

Last weekend, Amy Yang won the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in Samammish, Washington, with a 7-under par score of 281 to win by three strokes. It was her first major title.

Downstate in Detroit, the Professional Golf Association hosts the men’s Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club (7,370 yards, Par 72) from Thursday through Saturday. The prize money for the event is $9.2 million, with the winner taking home $1.656 million.

Rickie Fowler is the defending champion.

This past weekend, Scottie Scheffler won the Travelers Championship for his sixth victory so far in 2024, becoming the first golfer since Arnold Palmer in 1962 to win six starts on the PGA Tour before July.
