Louis Rees-Zammit: Kansas City Chiefs prospect completes audition for roster spot

While it seems unlikely that Rees-Zammit will make the 53-man regular season squad, it is not impossible.

NFL roster building is a complicated business and the Chiefs will likely take all the time they have to make a decision.

Rees-Zammit is one of several Chiefs players currently on the ‘roster bubble’ – the name given to the players competing for the final few spots.

At running back, the Chiefs clearly have the top pick in Isiah Pacheco, while former first-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire should remain part of the roster.

Steele’s pre-season debut gives him a real shot at earning a spot on the regular-season roster at running back. The Chiefs’ offseason roster also includes Rees-Zammit, Prince, Emani Bailey and Keaontay Ingram.

If Rees-Zammit does make the regular season roster, it will likely come via special teams.

As it stands, there are several players ahead of him on the list as kick returners, including Mercole Hardman and rookie Xavier Worthy.

Rees-Zammit will need to show he is a genuine threat on kick returns to increase his chances of a place in the regular season squad.

Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, the highest-paid player at that position in the NFL, will continue to kick for the AFC West champion.

Typically, NFL franchises only name one kicker to the regular season roster, so Rees-Zammit will have to look elsewhere for a spot on his roster despite playing as a kicker in pre-season play.
