It’s been a busy spring for the Los Alamos Garden Club (LAGC). During our most recent Memorial Rose Garden work party, the 2024 Los Alamos Garden Club Scholarship Winner Cameron Meadows Met and thanked the members present in the Garden. Cameron, a 2024 Graduated from Los Alamos High School, plans to attend the University of Colorado Boulder in the fall, majoring in Environmental Design.

During his LAHS years, Cameron participated in the Eco Club and was active in athletics, including hockey, lacrosse and golf, in addition to work and participate in church activities.

Earlier this season on a wet, snowy day, New Mexico’s District II Garden clubs, consisting of Los Alamos Garden Club, Summit Garden Club and the Floral Designers Club held their district meeting under the chairmanship of by District Director Kersti Rock. The members present were presented an excellent program on penstemons by Dr. Larry Deaven.

The annual state convention of the New Mexico Garden Clubs takes place in April took place in Santa Fe. Chaired by Laurie Hixson, club member and 2nd vice president of New Mexico Garden Clubs, the convention was a great enterprise and a resounding success! Participants from all over the state gathered to begin the general session of the Congress on the Governor’s House. After the first meeting in the house, the members participated in additional programming at the conference hotel with a keynote lecture by George Duda, a New Mexico expert on forestry, particularly urban forestry. New Mexico Garden Clubs were particularly honored by the presence of the South Central Region Director of National Garden Clubs, Inc., Sarah McReynolds.

During the spring the Los Alamos Garden Club continues to support Los Alamos County’s request to erect a fence around the Memorial Rose Garden. During the June meeting of the Historic Advisory Council for Preservation club’s request for a fence around the deer was presented by Kersti Rock and unanimously approved. The The next steps for the club are to obtain approval from the New Mexico Department of Historical Preservation and financing for the fence of the District.

The Los Alamos Garden Club meets on the 3rd Monday of each month at 10:00 am, September through May, at Crossroads Bible Church. All welcome. In addition to our monthly programming, since the beginning 1950s, the Los Alamos Garden Club maintained the Memorial Rose Gardening. Come garden with us!
