Liverpool star’s agent accused of transfer links to Man City

It is unlikely that Liverpool will ever sell Luis Diaz to Manchester City, but recent reports claim otherwise.

Earlier this week, Spanish broadcaster El Chiringuito TV published a major report claiming that the Colombian winger had agreed personal terms on a five-year contract with Pep Guardiola’s club and that a transfer worth £60m (€70m) was in the works.

However, Arne Slot was quick to quash the rumour. The Dutchman claimed in a recent press conference (Sky Sports) that the South American’s ‘future lay with Liverpool’.

While the Reds prepare to kick off the season with an away match against Kieran McKenna’s newly promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday afternoon, Diaz’s future remains uncertain.

Did Luis Diaz’s agent deliberately withhold news of Manchester City’s transfer?

The 27-year-old, who is valued at £50million by Liverpool, is expected to play a key role for the 2019-20 champions. According to Football Insider, the cause of these recent transfer links could stem directly from the winger’s agent.

Interestingly, a move to the Etihad Stadium is unlikely due to the fierce rivalry between the two clubs. It is claimed that Diaz’s representatives have ‘possibly’ told journalists that their client could join City ‘to help broker a new deal with Liverpool or to attract interest from other clubs’.

Diaz has three years left on his contract, which will see him earn £55,000-a-week, according to Spotrac.

While still a significant weekly wage, the Colombian’s deal is a far cry from those of his rivals who play in the same position. For example, Manchester City’s Jack Grealish earns £300,000-a-week, as do Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford on £300,000-a-week and Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka on £195,000-a-week, so a new and improved contract for Diaz is understandably a top priority.
