Liverpool planning surprise move for Federico Chiesa – source

Liverpool are considering a move for Federico Chiesa ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline after being informed of the Juventus forward’s availability, a source told ESPN.

The 26-year-old was close to completing a €13 million ($14.5 million) move to Barcelona earlier this month, but the LaLiga club have yet to conclude a deal and Liverpool are now making enquiries about the Italy international in preparation for a potential switch this week.

Chiesa, whose contract with Juventus expires at the end of this season, has struggled with a series of injuries since helping Roberto Mancini’s Italy team to triumph at Euro 2020, including a 10-month ACL injury.

Despite his poor condition, Liverpool are interested in Chiesa because of his pedigree and versatility.

Liverpool have yet to sign a new player this summer, having appointed Arne Slot as head coach following Jurgen Klopp’s departure from Anfield at the end of last season.

Negotiations are still ongoing over a €40 million deal for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, with the Georgian international set to remain at the Spanish club on loan for the remainder of the season.

Slot has indicated he is happy with his current squad, but Liverpool could still add Chiesa this week if a suitable deal can be struck with Juventus.
