Liverpool make offer to sign Alan Varela

Liverpool are reportedly in the process of signing Porto midfielder Alan Varela.

According to journalist Luis Fregossi of Mundo Boca Radio, Liverpool have made a formal offer to sign the 23-year-old defensive midfielder from Porto and the Argentina international is expected to join the club before the transfer window closes.

Liverpool have been working on the transfer for a while now, having made their first enquiry in April. Varela is highly rated across Europe and could be a good signing for Liverpool.

It is no surprise that they are looking to sign a good defensive midfielder this summer. Last season they used Alexis Mac Allister in the anchor role, but the Argentina international is more suited to the role of an advanced central midfielder.

The Reds have yet to bring in a quality replacement for Fabinho and Varela would be a solid long-term investment. Although Liverpool signed Wataru Endo from Stuttgart last season and the Japan international performed reasonably well, they need to invest in a player with more quality if they want to challenge for major trophies.

Alan Varela would transform Liverpool

Varela has shown his qualities in Portuguese football and he has the physical and technical attributes to do well in the Premier League. He has all the tools to develop into a top class player and could transform Liverpool in midfield.

He will protect Liverpool’s defence and give the creative players more freedom.

The chance to join a big club like Liverpool will also appeal to the South American midfielder and he will want to get started in the Premier League straight away. It remains to be seen whether Liverpool can complete the transfer before the transfer window closes later today.

Liverpool are hoping to challenge for major honours this season and must address weaknesses in their squad before the transfer window closes.
