LIV Golf star reveals Phil Mickelson’s recruiting techniques

Brendan Steele has claimed he would only join in LIV Golf if he could be on Phil Mickelson’s team.

Steele joined the PGA Tour’s leading pack last February, having never seen one of their events.

He has already won once in the Saudi-backed competition and, crucially, done enough to avoid relegation.

That means his spot on the HyFlyers 2025 roster is safe.

Steele shared how he came to LIV Golf on the latest episode of the Fairway to heaven podcast.

Former PGA Tour professional Cameron Tringale was the first to approach the subject, according to Steele.

“Cameron had asked me, ‘Would you ever come?’ And I’m like, ‘If I did that, it would be with you guys, so if there was ever a chance, I’d like to know about it,'” he said.

“And Phil called and he just said, ‘Look, I wanted to discuss something with you before I went in another direction, I wasn’t sure if you’d be interested or whatever.’

“We were just talking about it and I thought this is too good an opportunity to pass up, in terms of picking Phil’s brain, traveling the world, having a team, you know, like everything that’s on the line was a perfect opportunity.

He added: “And then there’s still nerves and stuff because I don’t know what it’s like out there.

“I haven’t played a LIV event yet, I haven’t seen one yet, so I’m going to Mayakoba last year and I’m quite nervous, and I’m quite worried about how it’s all going to be and stuff, and I’m comfortable, very quickly.”

The HyFlyers consist of Mickelson, Steele, Tringale and Andy Ogletree.
