It was an important day in Williamsport.

On Monday, four American teams and four international teams tried to avoid their first defeat and put themselves in a promising position to reach their respective championship games.

The losers are now eliminated and must hope that the pitchers are up to the challenge that awaits them.

Below you will find an overview of the events of that day.

Japan beats Venezuela 2-1

It was a tough performance for Tokyo.

Pitcher Kanta Iwashita led the way, allowing one run and five hits while retiring 11 Venezuelan batters. The Japanese offense wasn’t super strong, with just four hits on the day, but it did enough to earn the one-run victory.

Japan struck first when Yuzuki Ozawa hit the ball over the right fielder’s head for an RBI double.

A single by Simón Vicheria in the third inning tied the score, but Japan scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning.

Japan is now just one win away from the International Championship Game, while Venezuela faces Aruba on Tuesday.
