Lions Pro Bowl RB Jahmyr Gibbs, 1st round rookie CB Terrion Arnold leave practice with injuries

The Detroit Lions lost several key players to injuries during practice on Monday: running back Jahmyr Gibbs, first-round rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold and second-round rookie cornerback Ennis Rakestraw.

The Lions told reporters that Gibbs left practice with a leg injury, Arnold with an upper-body injury and Raekstraw with an ankle injury. ESPN’s Adam Schefter later reported that Gibbs’ injury is to his hamstring.

According to reporters, all three were evaluated after training. Further details about the injuries were initially unclear.

Gibbs is coming off a breakout rookie campaign that ended with Pro Bowl honors. A 2023 first-round pick, Gibbs threw for 1,216 yards from scrimmage and 11 touchdowns in an offense that ranked third in the NFL. He was key to Detroit’s ascent to the NFC North title and NFC championship game.

Detroit’s secondary was its biggest weakness last season. The Lions addressed it with their first two picks in the NFL draft, selecting Arnold out of Alabama with the 24th pick and Rakestraw out of Missouri with the 61st pick in April. Arnold is expected to start, while Rakestraw is expected to play a significant backup role in his rookie season.

The Lions are expected to compete for the NFC North title and beyond this season. Losing Gibbs, Arnold or Rakestraw for any significant period of time would be an early setback in what is expected to be a competitive division race.
