Lionesses one step away from the Olympic Games in Paris with victory over the Czech Republic

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 23 – The national women’s rugby 7s team is 14 minutes away from competing in their third Olympic Games after a nail-biting 12-10 win over the Czech Republic in the semi-final of the World Rugby Repechage in Monaco on Sunday evening.

Naomi Amuguni got the Lionesses going when she burst through a barrage of Czech players in Kenya’s 22 to comfortably land on the white chalk.

Grace Adhiambo then fired between the posts to add sparkle to the score.

Coach Dennis ‘Ironman’ Mwanja’s accusations appeared to have smelled blood and went for murder.

Japan’s Janet Okello continued her performance as player of the tournament as she powered down the right flank to score her fourth try of the competition.

However, the Eastern Europeans replied just before half-time, with their danger woman Kristyna Riegertova sprinting down the left wing to score her sixth try.

Lionesses came back energetic and motivated in the second half to close out the match.

They enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and camped in their opponents’ 22, but were let down by ball-handling errors and the Czech’s determined defending.

With a minute before the final whistle the roles were reversed, with the Czech attempting to take the match to extra time.

A forward pass into the Kenyan half, with seconds remaining, resulted in a scrum from which Julie Durychova emerged with the ball and raced to the try line.

However, it took a minute for referee Cisco Lopez to confirm it was a try, while replays tried to determine whether the oval ball had hit the white chalk under pressure from Judith Auma.

With the try confirmed, it was left to Julie Dulezilova to switch between the posts and level the scores.

Fortunately, her scoring boots were off color and she kicked wide of the posts, leading to great celebration from the Lionesses.

Next up is a date with China, who ousted Poland 40-7 in the other semi-final.

Kenya will be encouraged by the fact that they are the only team to beat the rampant Chinese 17-12 in the first leg of the Challenger Series in Dubai in January.
