Lexi Thompson has not yet confirmed whether the 2024 AIG Women’s Open will be her final Major

Lexi Thompson surprised many in late May this year when she confirmed that she plans to retire from golf. Thompson burst onto the golf scene at the age of 10 and began her professional career at 15. Although she is still relatively young at 29, Thompson seems to be tiring of her long career. Many are wondering if Thompson is considering changing her decision or if she will compete in Majors next year.

Lexi has the right to play in two Majors this year, but her statement that the 2024 AIG Women’s Open will be the last Major of her career raises several questions. In a recent media interview, Thompson decided to reveal her intentions regarding next year’s Majors. She admitted that she is thinking about it, but still does not know if she will make that decision.

“I’ve thought about it. There are a few that I’m definitely in, but yeah, I haven’t thought about it that much.”– said Lexi Thompson, quoted by Golf Monthly.

At 29, Lexi wants to take some time for herself and get the most out of it. Being in the spotlight since she was 15, surrounded by media, cameras and the pressure on your shoulders, can be quite tiring. Thompson has experienced this firsthand. Years of training, commitments and major tournaments have left their mark on her, but Thompson still doesn’t want to completely rule out the possibility of a return, at least for the Majors next year.

It seems like Lexi Thompson is still thinking about her decision. She probably isn’t sure if she made the right choice.

“For next year I’m going to take some time off and see how I feel, how I feel mentally and where I’m at. But I know I still have a few majors to play if I want to tee off there and prepare my game.

But yeah, we’ll see. I haven’t really thought about this being my last one, because there are more opportunities next year if I want to.” –Lexi Thompson continued:

Lexi Thompson on Playing in the Solheim Cup

Special attention is paid to the Solheim Cup, in which she has participated six times. Thompson has proudly represented the US on this grand stage and is eager to do so again. She has never hesitated to express how hungry she is for success and how much she wants to be a part of the team.

Thompson considers it a unique experience that cannot be compared to anything else. The special atmosphere and motivation during such a competition are unmatched. The Solheim Cup is a huge departure from everyday tournaments, because it offers something completely different from regular golf events.

“Very hungry. If I get to represent my country, my number 1 goal is to be in this team. There is no comparison.

I feel like it brings out an energy and talent in all of us that fans don’t see every week. I think they really enjoy it. You’re not just playing for yourself.“- said Lexi Thompson.

The 29-year-old stressed that while golf is an individual sport, playing with 12 other women is something else entirely. It’s a special feeling to compete with colleagues who would normally be your opponents on the golf course and to develop friendships and positive relationships. Thompson also stressed how great it is to play under the guidance of a captain who you look up to. She described the experience as something very special.

The last three editions have not been particularly favorable for the American team, although the most recent event in Spain resulted in a draw. The European team, playing away in Ohio in 2021, secured a victory with a score of 15-13. Only two years earlier (2019), the Europeans also won when they played in Scotland.

Before that, the American team had already won twice, both home and away.

The next Solheim Cup will be held in Virginia and the US team is desperate to win after the disappointments of the previous three editions. It seems that the US team is more motivated than ever and is looking for success. The Solheim Cup is a great opportunity to represent the country in the best light.

The first edition of this competition was held in 1990 in Florida. In the 18 editions so far, the American team is leading with a record of 10-8, and there has only been one tie, which was last year. The European women are also hungry for success, they want to even the score and take the lead. Both teams have great golfers at their disposal, so we will certainly witness an exciting edition of the Solheim Cup this year.
