Leicester City set to sell £17m midfielder to European team

Fenerbahce are reportedly interested in signing midfielder Boubakary Soumare from Leicester City.

Soumare joined the Foxes from Lille in July 2021 for £17million (according to Sky Sports) and made 59 appearances in all competitions during his first two seasons at the club.

However, after the Foxes were relegated to the Championship at the end of the 2022/23 season, the former France youth international was loaned to Sevilla last season.

Soumare made 34 appearances for the Spanish side in all competitions and finished first among his teammates in the number of possessions won in midfield (77) in La Liga.

Sevilla reportedly had a permanent option to loan Soumare, but their failure to qualify for European football made a move difficult to achieve, and he eventually returned to the King Power Stadium.

Fenerbahce make move for Leicester City star Soumare

Boubakary Soumare of Leicester City looks on during the pre-season friendly match between Shrewsbury Town and Leicester City at Croud Meadow on July 23, 2024 in Cheltenham, England.

Marseille Insider The minute OM reported in July that the French club was interested in signing the former The Blues youth international on board.

That interest seems to have cooled and now the Turkish media Aslinda (via Sport Witness) reports that Fenerbahçe is seriously interested.

The Istanbul giants, who finished second behind arch-rivals Galatasaray last season despite scoring a massive 99 points from 38 games and losing once, have put central midfield at the top of their priority list after former Man Utd man Fred suffered a knee ligament injury in pre-season.

Manager José Mourinho needs an experienced player to fill the void left by Fred, with Fenerbahce reportedly taking ‘concrete steps’ in their pursuit of Soumare.

Soumare played 11 minutes off the bench on Monday as Leicester drew 1-1 with Tottenham in their first match back in the Premier League.
