League of Legends creator clears up ‘confusion’ over Arcane’s ‘five-season plan’: ‘Arcane was always written for two seasons’

Riot Games co-founder and League of Legends creator Marc Merrill has cleared up the confusion surrounding Arcane’s “five seasons” plan, saying the Netflix series would only last two seasons.

In response to an article that suggested Arcane lasted two seasons because there are “other stories to tell” in the League of Legends universe, Merrill replied to Reddit: “Arcane was always written for two seasons.”

About the five seasons rumor that keeps going around – perhaps as a result of Variety’s report about the show’s $250 million budget, which noted that Arcane was “initially budgeted for a five-season arc,” Merrill wrote, “The confusion is that there was a budget conversation internally about ‘approving five seasons’ – which simply means we’re setting aside a few seasons’ worth of money for a lot of development and is completely irrelevant to Arcane’s creative. Creating and making something great is what should always be the priority for Riot and our teams.

Merrill added: “We’ve also always envisioned telling more stories and expanding the universe further. That never changed – people just jumped on rumors or misleading headlines and Riot didn’t correct them – but considering those rumors gained momentum, thankfully to clarify.”

Despite Merrill outlining intentions to expand the League of Legends universe with more film and TV projects, don’t expect them to just be rolled out.

As Merrill explained: “Just because that’s our intention doesn’t mean it’s easy or that we can pump these things out like a factory – just like making games worth players’ time and love is very difficult, That includes telling great stories and making incredible shows/movies (especially if we’re building it from scratch for the first time).”

With Act 3 – and the final episodes of Arcane – just over the horizon, the fuss over Arcane’s $250 million budget continues. While one anime director has pointed out that the Netflix series costs 25 times more than his own show, co-showrunner Christian Linke defended the budget in an interview with Animation magazinesaying, “Nobody ever made anything great by not taking bets.”
