Latest Middle East: Mayor killed in Israeli attack on southern Lebanese city | World news

At least 42,409 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7 last year, the Hamas-led Health Ministry said.

Another 99,153 people have been injured, it added.

The latest figures show that 65 people have been killed and 817 injured in the past 24 hours.

The ministry’s figures do not distinguish between Hamas fighters and civilians.

For context: While some Israeli officials have sought to cast doubt on the death toll, several independent groups say the ministry’s figures have proven largely reliable and largely in line with figures later produced by the UN and Israel itself.

Examination of data from previous conflicts in Gaza – comparing the Hamas-led Health Ministry’s counts with the United Nations’ post-war analysis – shows that the initial data is largely accurate, with a discrepancy of 10-12% at most.

The Israeli military told Sky News earlier this month that 20,000 Hamas militants had been killed, but this remains unverified.
