Las Vegas GP: Williams’ Franco Colapinto needs medical treatment after crash during qualifying

Franco Colapinto’s participation in the Las Vegas Grand Prix will be subject to a medical examination ahead of Saturday night’s race after suffering a 50G impact during qualifying.

Colapinto crashed heavily in Q2 after clipping the wall on the inside of Turn 16, sending his car careening into the outside barrier at an acute angle.

The impact was so great that the concrete barrier was forced out of position, forcing the session to be suspended while it was repaired and debris from Colapinto’s wrecked car was swept away.

Although Colapinto was able to walk away from the accident, Williams confirmed he had to undergo a medical before being allowed to race.

“During qualifying, Franco suffered a significant impact of more than 50G, requiring a medical check,” a statement from Williams said. “An impact of this magnitude is obviously significant and serious and he will need to be re-evaluated tomorrow before we know if he is ready to race.

“Franco’s health is all that matters and we are happy that he is doing well. We will provide further updates when we can.”

The accident comes just three weeks after Williams suffered millions of dollars in damage in three accidents involving his two cars at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Colapinto, who has impressed since replacing Logan Sargeant with the team at the Dutch Grand Prix, qualified 14th on the grid for Saturday night’s race.
