Los Angeles Lakers superstar and NBA legend LeBron James was announced Wednesday as the honorary chairman for the 2025 Met Gala.

According to Fashion‘s Leah Faye Cooper, James will be joined by several co-chairs, including seven-time Formula 1 racing champion Lewis Hamilton.

The Met Gala is a fashion event fundraiser held annually at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, with the 2025 edition scheduled for May 5.

According to Cooper, the theme of the 2025 Met Gala is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” In conjunction with the exhibition, the Costume Institute also named musicians A$AP Rocky and Pharrell Williams, and actor Colman Domingo as co-chairs.

The 39-year-old James is in the conversation for the greatest basketball player of all time, and he remains one of the most influential athletes in the world.

A 20-time All-Star, four-time NBA MVP, four-time NBA Champion and four-time NBA Finals MVP, James is about to enter his 22nd season, but he continues to perform at an elite level.

The oldest player in the NBA last season, James averaged 25.7 points, 8.3 assists and 7.3 rebounds per game for a Lakers team that reached the playoffs.

He also helped Team USA win an Olympic gold medal in basketball this summer, with FIBA naming him tournament MVP at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris.

Despite his eye for fashion and status as a pop culture icon, 2025 will mark James’ first-ever appearance at the Met Gala, according to Cooper.

Conversely, Hamilton is a Met Gala veteran, having attended the event regularly since 2015.

Just as James is arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, an argument can be made that Hamilton is the greatest driver in motorsports history.

The 39-year-old veteran is tied with Michael Schumacher for the most F1 points titles with seven. He also ranks first in race wins with 105 and poles with 104.

Halfway through his final season at Mercedes, Hamilton has achieved two wins and is sixth in the F1 standings. From next season, Hamilton will switch to Ferrari after signing a multi-year contract with the team.
