Lagos Police pledges support to UNILAG and LASU for Africa University games

THE Lagos State Police Command has expressed readiness to provide adequate security to sportsmen and women and officials, as well as other participants who will come to Lagos for the upcoming 11th All Africa University Games (FASU).

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Akoka and the Lagos State University (LASU) Ojo will jointly organize the gaming events involving over 3,000 students and officials from various universities in Africa.

This will be the second time that Nigeria will host the competitions scheduled for September covering athletics, badminton, chess, judo, table tennis, karate, taekwondo, swimming, basketball, football, volleyball and handball.

The newly appointed Lagos Police Commissioner, Mr. Fayoade Adegoke Mustapha, made the promise when the Vice Chancellor of LASU, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, led her team on a visit to him at the Ikeja Police Station recently.

According to the police chief, providing security is the primary responsibility of the police because if athletes from all over Africa coming to Lagos do not have a good story to tell, it will depend on the image of the country.

“So we will be closely involved in the sports festival,” he assured.

While expressing happiness at the peace LASU has enjoyed over the years, the CP also assured the university of more support to maintain the atmosphere.

In her earlier remarks, Professor Olatunji-Bello congratulated the police boss on his appointment and wished him well in his new role.

She said she was particularly happy that the CP is an alumnus of LASU as she sought his support in providing adequate security around LASU and Lagos in general and also during the FASU Games.

She said the prayer of LASU and co-hosts UNILAG is that they may have a successful outing for all participants from all African countries coming to the games.
