The arrival of veteran shooting guard Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks has the team believing it can go to the NBA Finals again and this time win the title.

“I feel like our dreams can be possible because he’s here now,” point guard Kyrie Irving said at media day on Monday, according to Joe Vardon of The Athletic.

Thompson was a key member of the Golden State Warriors dynasty that won four NBA titles in eight years. He became a free agent after a tumultuous 2023-2024 season and opted to join the Mavs, where he formed a talented trio with Irving and star point guard Luka Dončić.

Dallas made a surprising run to the 2024 NBA Finals, but fell to the Boston Celtics in five games. One of the things that doomed the team was its lack of shooting, and Thompson is expected to help improve in that area.

“Pfft, unbelievable,” said Dončić. “He’s a four-time champion, a great player. I think the spacing will be perfect for us.”

The Mavs open their 2024-2025 season against the San Antonio Spurs on October 24, giving fans a first look at the team’s new star trio in action.
