Kris Boyd urges Leeds to sign Sammie Szmodics after draw with Portsmouth

Kris Boyd believes Leeds should sign Blackburn Rovers striker Sammie Szmodics after Mateo Joseph failed to impress against Portsmouth.

After Leeds failed to gain promotion last season after losing the play-off final to Southampton, the new season got off to a chaotic start against Pompey.

Daniel Farke’s side needed a penalty from Brenden Aaronson in the 95th minute to make it 3-3 at Elland Road.

It was a difficult summer for Leeds, who lost Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville to Tottenham and West Ham respectively.

These departures have left the Whites stripped of a lot of quality and there is still a chance of more players leaving, with Wilfried Gnonto attracting interest from Premier League clubs.

However, Leeds have a significant budget to spend on reinforcements during the transfer window and it is important that they spend this budget wisely and bring in the right players.

Szmodics was the top scorer in the championship last season.

Former Rangers striker Boyd felt Leeds were not dangerous enough in front of goal and urged them to invest some of the money they had earned in Szmodics, who was the Championship’s top scorer last season with 27 goals.

“He (Summerville) is (a miss), but if you look at what? Kamara is left-wing, Summerville, Archie Gray is left-wing, you go through the whole list, they have money there, why don’t you go and get a striker?” he told Sky Sports Soccer on Saturday

“You’ve got someone there, Sammie Smodzics, who scored the goals for Blackburn last year, can you go and get him?

“Because they created a lot of chances, but they never looked like they were going to score. It was all because of (Willy) Gnonto or Dan James, the good work they did. (Jayden) Bogle went forward, Junior Firpo went forward, they put the balls in the box, but Joseph in the middle was huffing and puffing, but nothing really happened.”

Szmodics attracted the attention of Ipswich earlier in the transfer window and Blackburn will be desperate to keep hold of their star player, who scored in their 4-2 win over Derby on Friday.

It is certainly not the intention to panic after one game, but the arrival of a proven goalscorer like Szmodics would be a big plus and could mean the difference between automatic promotion or participation in the play-offs.
