The New York Knicks have both Mitchell Robinson and Precious Achiuwa returning to their roster for the 2024-25 NBA season, meaning they have a pair of players who can handle the bulk of the responsibility under center.

At the same time, the Knicks could increase their depth at that position.

It’s been a hot topic lately, as New York may be looking to add a center at some point in the future, which could happen anytime between now and the February 6 transfer deadline.

Which centers could the Knicks target if they were to explore the trade market?

SNY’s Ian Begley recently listed several possible options, including Nick Richards of the Charlotte Hornets, Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz, Robert Williams of the Portland Trail Blazers and Jonas Valanciunas of the Washington Wizards.

Of these players, Kessler could be the most ideal center for New York.

Kessler is just 23, with two years of NBA experience under his belt. The 7-footer has been a solid role player for Utah, averaging 8.7 points and 8.0 rebounds in 138 career games.

Kessler also won’t become a restricted free agent until after the 2025-26 season, so he could be a long-term fit for the Knicks if they reach a deal with the Jazz to land him.

There’s a good chance Kessler hasn’t reached his full potential either. He may only get better as he gets more time in the league.

Would Utah even be willing to move Kessler this early in his career? That’s unknown at this point. And New York certainly wouldn’t have to pay too much in a trade to make something happen.

But if the Jazz are willing to listen to reasonably priced offers, the Knicks would be wise to jump in. Adding Kessler to a roster that already has Robinson and Achiuwa would further bolster the group of big men in their rotation.

Begley believes the Knicks could soon start talking about a center trade.

“I’m a little surprised the Knicks haven’t signed an experienced backup center at this point. They opened up a championship window here with the (Mikal) Bridges trade,” Begley wrote. “I’d be surprised if they wait until the trade deadline to address the center position.”

Perhaps an aggressive mindset could bring Kessler to New York. It’s a move that could work out well for both parties.
