Klay Thompson writes emotional farewell to Golden State

Klay Thompson thanked the Golden State Warriors for giving him the “best time of my life.”

Thompson’s 13-year association with the Warriors came to an end Monday when he signed a three-year, $50 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks.

His final season was one to forget, as he was benched due to poor form that coincided with failed contract negotiations. However, the 34-year-old made it clear that this did not detract from a stellar run in which he helped the Dubs to four NBA championships.

Thompson wrote on Instagram: “Oh Bay Area, there are not enough words and images to express how I truly feel about you.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for the best times of my life. It was such an honor to put on that Dubs shirt from day 1. I just wanted to be the best I could be and help bring as many championships to the region as possible.

“The best part wasn’t the rings, but the friendships I made that will last a lifetime.

“My family and I want to thank all the amazing people who work tirelessly to make the Warriors organization world class. Don’t be sad it’s over, be happy it happened. Until we meet again. Sea Captain out.”

The Warriors have already announced they will be retiring Thompson’s jersey number 11, while Steph Curry paid tribute to his former teammate on Instagram on Tuesday, writing: “I’m gonna miss you.

“Even though we don’t finish the journey together, what we did will never happen again. I couldn’t have imagined a better run with you and Draymond Green. It changed the whole Bay Area. It changed the way the game is played. Killa Klay is front and center. Thanks for everything bro. Go play basketball and do what you do.”
