King Charles surprises royal fan on her 87th birthday

King Charles surprised royal fan Alice Ryce last week when she celebrated her 87th birthday at Dumfries House estate.

In a clip shared on the monarch’s official social media page, Charles was seen enjoying a stroll before bumping into Alice and wishing her a happy birthday.

His Majesty, 75, could be heard saying: “Many happy returns,” before the couple shook hands. And judging by Alice’s slightly shocked but joyous reaction, their unexpected reunion was an absolute treat.

Charles’ social media team added the following caption: “The King gave Alice Ryce ‘the surprise of a lifetime’ when she bumped into him in the grounds of Dumfries House last week, on her 87th birthday.”

The continuation: “While visiting the estate, which is open to the public, Alice unexpectedly met His Majesty, who was delighted to share her special day with her.

“The King was in Ayrshire to support the work of The King’s Foundation, whose headquarters are at Dumfries House. Happy birthday, Alice!”

Fans of the royals flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts. One wrote: “What a lovely surprise for Alice”, while a second noted: “Probably the best birthday present ever!” and a third: “A walk through the beautiful gardens and an unexpected friendly birthday greeting! A lovely day all round!”

Charles acquired Dumfries House in 2007 when he was the Prince of Wales. The residence is set in 2,000 acres and features a beautiful 18th-century house and an adventure playground.

Unlike other royal houses, the estate is not intended as a residence for Charles and his wife Queen Camilla. Instead, it is used for various educational and training opportunities and is open to the public all year round.

Elsewhere in Scotland, King Charles and Queen Camilla own a private home, Birkhall, which is located on the Balmoral estate.

The couple honeymooned at the property after marrying in 2005. More recently, it has also been Charles’ retreat during much of the COVID-19 lockdown.

During an interview with Country lifeCharles said of the majestic garden: “It’s such a special place, especially because it was created by my grandmother. It’s a garden from my childhood, and all I’ve done is improve it a little bit.”
