Murray’s career has been marked by many prestigious victories, as well as the satisfaction of becoming world number 1 in 2016. The Scot has been very consistent at a high level and has defeated legends such as Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal And Roger Federerdespite winning far fewer Grand Slam titles than they did. During a recent interview with The Telegraph, Kim Sears – Andy Murray’s wife – commented on the former world number 1’s retirement: “He is absolutely at peace with this idea of retirement. I saw him getting used to the idea in his head at that moment during the Wimbledon interview. He sees himself playing tennis with his children, but for now they don’t feel like it.”

Kim revealed that the last few years have not been easy for Andy: “I find it really hard to watch Andy play now. I think I find it incredibly stressful because I’m a mother and I’ve got four other little people to worry about. I’ve never seen anyone take on a challenge like he has.

I think he feels at home when his back is against the wall and he has to fight for things. And I think that’s obviously what’s made him so great. I mean, I just get sick when he plays, honestly, it’s a really unpleasant feeling. And he also just does his best to make games difficult to look forward to, which for the general public and impartial spectators might be quite exciting and addictive, but for those closest to him, it’s just unbearable.”

Andy was a warrior

After the delicate hip operation in 2019, Murray has not returned to his old level. The Scot has worked hard to get back to top form, but he has not won any major titles and had to settle for a second place in the Grand Slam tournaments.

During a lengthy interview with Sky Sports, former ATP ace Tim Henman commented on Murray’s legacy: “I think his biggest achievement is his two Wimbledon titles. Understanding everything that goes into being a British player and competing in the Championships. To come out and win the biggest event in our sport – twice is for me his biggest achievement. What do I think Andy Murray will do next? Hopefully a little relaxed! I’m not sure if he’s going to do that, but he has a wife and four kids and hopefully he can spend some time with them.

He can enjoy the lack of structure, without the tournaments, the training and the travel, and just give himself a bit of time to decide what he can do and what he wants to do next, because there will be plenty of opportunities. I guess my advice would be not to start too soon. You still have plenty of time and plenty of opportunities ahead of you.”

The three-time Grand Slam champion is ready to embark on his second life, hoping that injuries won’t affect his quality of life. Murray is the second of the Fab Four to retire after Roger Federer, who retired from the Laver Cup two years ago. Next up should be Rafael Nadal, who has struggled in recent months and is deciding his future.

The Spanish champion did not shine at the Olympic Games in Paris and recently announced that he will not participate in the 2024 edition of the US Open.
