Kei Kamara makes history in the MLS, leaving Landon Donovan behind

Kei Kamara has firmly etched his name in the history of Major League Soccer (MLS). With a historic goal, he surpassed Landon Donovan and became the competition’s second all-time top scorer with 146 goals.

Saturday night was special for Kamara. In a 6–2 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes while playing for Los Angeles FC, Kamara emblematically found the net with a powerful header, just as he did in the record-equalling goal three days earlier.

“I hope this makes a lot of people happy. I know my friends and family are ecstatic because they have been counting my goals and sending me messages all these years. I see how happy they are,” Kamara said emotionally after the match. .

And that is no small achievement. Surpassing Landon Donovan, widely considered the greatest American soccer player of all time, is no easy task. Donovan is not just a name; he is an institution in American football. Having his name next to Donovan’s is a well-deserved recognition for Kamara, who has always shown respect for his predecessor’s legacy. “Landon is the greatest American football player of all time. It’s an honor to be mentioned alongside him,” he added.

But the story doesn’t end there. At 39 years old, Kamara is showing that he still has a lot of football left in him. He is just 25 goals behind Chris Wondolowski, the all-time leading scorer in MLS. Despite his modesty and respect for his friend, Kamara knows the record is within reach. “I don’t want to pass Wondo!” he laughed.

Having played for 11 different teams in the MLS, every goal and game seems to cement his status as the league’s living legend. His physical form and ability to find the back of the net at crucial moments are a testament to his longevity. Kamara proves that experience and wisdom also have their place.

Possessing a lot of confidence and playing for a strong team like LAFC, it is not an exaggeration to say that Kamara Wondolowski can indeed catch. And although he prefers not to talk about it, the possibility is real.
