Kamala Harris holds election night event at Howard University

WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, plans to spend election night at her alma mater, Howard University in Washington, according to three people familiar with the planning.

One source said the campaign will likely hold its election night event in the Quad, although the exact location on campus could change.

NBC News has reported that Harris’ campaign was eyeing the university, where Harris earned her bachelor’s degree, as a possible location for its headquarters on election night.

Harris’ roots at the historically black university run deep. In a letter published this month by The Hilltop, the student newspaper, Harris recalled “so many fond memories” of when she attended college, which she referred to by the nickname “The Mecca.”

“I realize that my time at Howard has shaped me into the person I am today. At Howard we learn that we have the ability to be great and also that we have the responsibility to work hard to fulfill that potential every day make,” Harris wrote.

She also pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first historically black sorority, at Howard in 1986.

Republican candidate Donald Trump’s campaign said it will host an election night watch party at a convention center in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he also has a resort. The campaign has not disclosed Trump’s election night plans.

Harris does not often campaign in Washington. News of her election night plans comes on the day she was scheduled to give a speech on the Ellipse at the White House.

In her speech Tuesday evening, Harris is expected to urge Americans to “turn the page” on her Republican rival, a senior Harris campaign official told NBC News. Trump addressed his supporters at the Ellipse shortly before the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot.
